First-come, first-served, with priority given to fresh (100-Level) and final-year students. Some students miss out each year not due to raw capacity, but due to applying too late.

300-Level students are frequently unable to secure hostel space, as this level typically coincides with Industrial Training (I.T.) or Teaching Practice (T.P.) placements off-campus.

Reported fees range from ₦20,000-₦35,000 across most sources, though a more recent source indicates some halls have been reduced to around ₦12,500 following a fee review plausibly linked to the Taraba State Government's broader 50% tuition reduction policy. Confirm current per-hall pricing directly with TASU.

TASU's Student Affairs Division has issued an official notice banning ALL cash payments for hostel accommodation payment must go through official online channels only, and students with earlier bed space reservations may be required to reprint updated verification slips. Paying or receiving cash for a hostel space carries disciplinary sanctions, and the university will not take responsibility for losses from cash transactions.

🎯

Admission Hack

Taraba State University (TASU) currently holds one of the biggest financial admission hacks in the country. Following a 50% downward review ordered by the State Government, it is now one of the cheapest state universities in Nigeria. If you are struggling with finances, this is a massive lifeline, as tuition can be as low as ₦47,700 for an entire session. During their online Post-UTME screening, the portal is incredibly strict about document formatting. A major trap that gets applicants disqualified is uploading a passport photograph with a colored background it MUST strictly be a white background and under 100kb. Furthermore, if you are a Direct Entry candidate with a 'Lower Credit' in your ND or just a 'Merit' in your NCE, TASU is highly receptive and will accept you, unlike many older universities that now strictly demand Upper Credit.

Campus Survival

Jalingo is a relatively serene and highly affordable state capital, making the cost of living for TASU students very manageable. If you miss out on the highly competitive on-campus bed spaces, you will join the vast majority of students living off-campus. The immediate host community and most popular student residential area is simply known as 'ATC' (around the First and Second Gates). Other bustling off-campus student areas include the 'Bakasi' area and 'Magami'. Because Jalingo can get incredibly hot during the dry season, prioritize renting a lodge in the ATC area that has a reliable, independent borehole system, as relying on commercial water vendors (Mairuwa) will quickly drain your pocket money. Commuting is mostly done via Keke (tricycles), so living closer to the First Gate saves you daily transport fares.

Frequently Asked Questions About TASU Admission

What is the general JAMB cut-off mark for Taraba State University?
The baseline JAMB cut-off mark for TASU is 150. However, competitive courses in the Health Sciences, Law, and Engineering demand higher scores.
Does Taraba State University accept second choice candidates?
No. Candidates must make Taraba State University their first choice during JAMB registration. If you did not, you must complete a Change of Institution on the JAMB portal before applying.
Is there a physical Post-UTME exam for TASU?
No. Taraba State University conducts an online screening exercise only. You are evaluated based on the documents you upload to the portal.
What documents do I need for the TASU online screening?
You need clear scanned copies of your O'Level result(s), JAMB Result Slip, Birth Certificate or Age Declaration, Indigene Letter, NIN, and a recent passport photograph (under 100kb, JPEG format, with a white background).
Is TASU's 150 JAMB baseline enough for Engineering courses like Mechanical Engineering?
No. While 150 is TASU's general baseline for most courses, Engineering programmes (including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical/Electronic, and Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering) have a confirmed higher departmental minimum of 180. A score between 150 and 179 clears the general eligibility floor but does not meet the Engineering-specific threshold. If your score falls in that range and Engineering is your goal, consider whether a related but less competitive course (such as one in the Faculty of Science) might be a stronger option, or aim to improve your score in a subsequent UTME attempt.
