Umaru Musa Yar'adua University (UMYU), formerly Katsina State University, was established by the Katsina State Government in 2006. Renamed in 2009 to honor the late former President of Nigeria, the university is a rapidly expanding center of learning in North-West Nigeria. UMYU has aggressively broadened its academic offerings from its initial faculties to include a prestigious Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (offering MBBS, Nursing, and Physiotherapy), a Faculty of Law, and cutting-edge tech programs like Cyber Security and Software Engineering.
Situated along Dutsin-ma Road in the historic city of Katsina, UMYU offers a highly disciplined and structured academic environment. The university runs a robust, tech-driven 'Collegeportal' where students handle everything from paying their differential tuition fees (which heavily favor Katsina State indigenes) to registering for courses. The campus actively supports renewable energy research and provides excellent facilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
💡 Pro Tip: Admission into UMYU is highly competitive and strictly regulated by tiered cut-off marks. While a 150 JAMB score grants access to Education and Arts programs, candidates aiming for Law or Medicine must score 190 and 220 respectively to be eligible. UMYU conducts a physical Computer-Based Aptitude Test, meaning candidates must physically travel to the campus for screening. To maximize your chances, prepare rigorously for this test, as it accounts for 10% of your total admission aggregate, with your JAMB score taking the remaining 90%. Additionally, ensure your O'Level subjects strictly align with the requirements for your specific course.
Direct Entry (DE) candidates must select UMYU as their first choice. They must possess a minimum of Lower Credit in ND/HND, Merit in NCE, or a minimum of 6 points in IJMB/A'Level qualifications. DE admission into highly competitive courses like Law or Medicine is subject to the availability of vacancies at the 200 level.
For PGD, candidates need a degree or an HND (Lower Credit). For Master's, candidates need a minimum of Second Class Honours. For Ph.D., candidates require a Master's degree (and a Master of Philosophy with a 3.50 CGPA for specific routes), plus a 500-word research synopsis. All PG applicants must also satisfy the basic O'Level requirements (5 credits including English and Maths). Application fee is ₦10,500.
UMYU conducts a physical Post-UTME Aptitude Test (Computer-Based Test) for UTME candidates. Candidates must pay a ₦2,000 screening fee online and print an Examination Card detailing their exact exam time and venue. The final admission aggregate is uniquely calculated by weighting the JAMB score at 90% and the Post-UTME Aptitude Test score at 10%.
