Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is Nigeria's first and oldest higher educational institution. It started in October 1947 as Yaba Technical Institute, taking over the activities of the former Yaba Higher College. In 1963, it was officially renamed by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and later gained full autonomy via Decree 23 of 1969. Historically at the forefront of technical education, YABATECH was notably the only college offering Higher Diploma courses in Nigeria until 1979.
Situated in the bustling heart of Yaba, Lagos (often referred to as Nigeria's tech valley), the main campus offers an unparalleled metropolitan student experience. Students are exposed to a highly competitive, innovative environment with active sports societies, deep industry connections, and an extension campus located in the serene town of Epe.
💡 Pro Tip: Admission into YABATECH is mathematically strict and highly competitive. Ensure your O'Level and UTME subject combinations perfectly match your chosen department's requirements, as YABATECH strictly enforces compulsory subjects like Mathematics and English across all boards. You must make YABATECH your first choice, upload your O'Level results to JAMB CAPS early, and rigorously prepare for the Post-UTME CBT.

Do not let the 'Polytechnic' label fool you; YABATECH is more competitive than many federal universities. The biggest trap for applicants is the O'Level requirement: Mathematics and English are strictly compulsory for EVERY single course, even for pure Arts or Mass Communication. Furthermore, YABATECH calculates your aggregate by dividing JAMB by 8 and your Post-UTME by 2, meaning your CBT performance is the ultimate tiebreaker. Finally, if your ultimate goal is a university degree, YABATECH offers a highly-searched B.Sc. programme in affiliation with UNN, allowing you to bypass the traditional university admission bloodbath while studying right in Lagos.
You must confirm your campus before hunting for accommodation. While the Main Campus is in the bustling tech hub of Yaba, specific departments like Agricultural Technology and Marine Engineering are isolated at the Epe Campus (which has a completely different, quieter lifestyle). For those at the Main Campus, securing an on-campus bed space (like the famous Akata or Bakassi hostels) requires paying your fees the exact minute the portal opens. If you miss out, you will have to navigate expensive off-campus hubs like Akoka, Abule Oja, or Onike. Prepare for a fast-paced, highly metropolitan lifestyle, and budget accordingly, as the cost of living in Yaba is notoriously high.
Despite being a Polytechnic, YABATECH's location in Lagos and its prestige make it more competitive than many Federal Universities. The 150 baseline is merely for portal access; high-demand programs like Computer Science, Mass Communication, and Engineering require final aggregate scores well above 60%. Additionally, the strict enforcement of Mathematics and English Language credit passes for ALL courses (even pure Arts) results in massive disqualifications every admission cycle.

For Higher National Diploma (HND), candidates require a relevant National Diploma (ND) at a minimum of Lower Credit from an NBTE-accredited institution, plus 1-year post-ND cognate work experience (or 2 years for Pass level). Direct Entry into 200-Level B.Sc. programmes requires application through the JAMB DE portal.
YABATECH conducts a Computer-Based Test (CBT) Post-UTME screening. Candidates must upload their O'Level results to JAMB CAPS. Final aggregate scores are calculated by dividing the JAMB score by 8 and the Post-UTME score by 2, then adding both together.
