Overview

The University of Uyo (UNIUYO), established in 1991, is a top-tier federal institution located in Akwa Ibom State, deep in the heart of Nigeria's oil-rich South-South region. Originating from the former University of Cross River State, UNIUYO has evolved into a comprehensive center of academic excellence. The university efficiently operates across four main campuses, featuring a sprawling Permanent Site alongside robust specialized divisions like the College of Health Sciences and the newly established Faculty of Computing.

Campus life at UNIUYO is dispersed across its multi-campus structure. The Town Campus and Annex Campus (located within Uyo metropolis) offer a bustling, culturally vibrant atmosphere, primarily hosting Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Business, and Law students. The Main Campus provides a serene, research-focused environment. Students enjoy a blend of rigorous academics, rich traditional heritage, and highly active student organizations.

💡 Pro Tip: Admission into the University of Uyo is strictly based on merit and is highly competitive. Candidates must make UNIUYO their first choice. While the general cut-off mark is 150, applicants eyeing elite fields like Engineering or Law should aim for 200+. Note that Clinical Science students enter through Basic Medical Sciences and cross over at the 300 Level. For Direct Entry candidates, UNIUYO accommodates both Upper and Lower Credit holders, but MBBS applicants must meet stringent A-Level or degree requirements.

Admission Requirements

Candidates must select UNIUYO as their first choice institution and score a minimum of 150 in the UTME. Candidates must possess at least five (5) O'Level credit passes (WASC, GCE, SSCE, or a Merit in Grade II) in relevant subjects, including Mathematics and English Language, in not more than two (2) sittings. Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) candidates strictly require credit passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and English Language.

Direct Entry Rules

Direct Entry candidates must choose UNIUYO as their first choice. Acceptable qualifications include at least two A-Level passes, an OND/HND at Upper or Lower Credit level, an NCE with a minimum of Merit, or a recognized Bachelor's degree. For Law, DE candidates are admitted into Year 2 of the 5-year programme. For MBBS DE, candidates specifically need A-Level passes in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology/Zoology, OR a good class degree in the Sciences.

Post UTME Screening Format

UNIUYO conducts a mandatory Online Admission Screening Exercise. Candidates are evaluated based on a Point Grading System combining their UTME score and O'Level grades. It is strictly required that candidates upload their O'Level results to JAMB CAPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UNIUYO admit students directly into Medicine and Surgery?
No. The Faculty of Clinical Sciences does not admit 100 Level students directly. Students are first admitted to study in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. After successfully passing their Basic Science courses (Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology) for three semesters and passing the Part I MBBS (2nd MB), they transition into the Clinical Faculty.
What is the UNIUYO JAMB cut-off mark?
The baseline JAMB cut-off mark for the University of Uyo is 150. However, highly competitive courses like Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, and Law require much higher scores (often above 200 to 240).
Does UNIUYO accept Lower Credit for Direct Entry?
Yes. UNIUYO accepts an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at either Upper or Lower Credit levels from recognized institutions.
Can I defer my admission at the University of Uyo?
Yes, but with strict conditions. To defer, you must have completed the department screening, been found qualified, formally accepted the admission, and paid the acceptance fee. Acceptable reasons include financial constraints, ill-health (with a medical report), non-release by an employer, or family problems. You cannot defer to make up for O'Level deficiencies.
