JAMB Cut-Off

150+

FUTO enforces a strict, three-tiered cut-off system. A score of 150 is acceptable for most programmes in Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Logistics, and select Physical Sciences/Engineering. A score of 170 is required for all courses in SICT and SESET, Architecture, Basic Medical Sciences, and premium Engineering/Health programmes (like Civil, Mech, Optometry, and Public Health). Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) strictly requires a minimum of 200.

As a Federal University, pure tuition is theoretically free for undergraduate Nigerian students. However, students pay consolidated service, laboratory, and municipal charges. Returning student fees sit at a standard baseline depending on the department. Freshmen pay significantly higher consolidated fees due to mandatory onboarding, acceptance, ICT, and medical screening charges. Premium courses like Medicine & Surgery command the highest consolidated fees.

Overview

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), established in 1980, is the premier federal university of technology in the South East and South South regions of Nigeria. Mandated to drive the nation's technological advancement, FUTO operates a highly specialized academic ecosystem. Its academic structure is unbundled into dedicated technical schools, notably including the School of Information & Communication Technology (SICT), the newly established Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Procurement, and an integrated College of Medicine.

Located in the Ihiagwa community of Owerri West, the FUTO campus is a massive, bustling hub of scientific inquiry and student enterprise. The university features extensive workshops, computing laboratories, and dedicated research institutes like the Centre for Energy and Power Systems Research. Students enjoy a deeply engaging campus life with numerous tech-focused societies, competitive sports, and digitized portals that simplify course registrations, fee payments, and result checking.

💡 Pro Tip: Admission into FUTO is highly competitive and rules-based. Candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30th of their admission year. You must make FUTO your first choice institution or do a Change of Institution. FUTO operates a tiered cut-off system: 150 for basic sciences and agriculture, 170 for computing and core engineering, and 200 for Medicine. MBBS candidates must obtain their required O'Level credits in a single sitting. For all candidates, accurately uploading and 'refreshing' your O'Level results on the JAMB CAPS portal is a mandatory requirement that cannot be bypassed. Direct Entry students must remember to mail their transcripts to the Registrar.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years old by September 30th of the admission year. Candidates must exclusively choose FUTO as their First Choice or process a formal 'Change of Institution' on the JAMB portal. Applicants must possess at least 5 O'Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and three relevant subjects in not more than two sittings. However, MBBS applicants MUST obtain their 5 core credits (English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in a SINGLE sitting.

Direct Entry Rules

Direct Entry candidates must hold an OND, HND, or First Degree in relevant disciplines, or possess A'Level passes (e.g., JUPEB/IJMB). Crucially, DE candidates are strictly required to ensure their official academic transcripts are forwarded directly to the Registrar of the University by the stipulated screening deadline, failure of which results in automatic disqualification.

Post UTME Screening Format

The FUTO screening exercise is typically an online document evaluation based on verified JAMB scores and O'Level results. It is strictly mandatory that all candidates ensure their O'Level results are accurately uploaded and 'Refreshed' on the JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the general cut-off mark for FUTO?
FUTO uses a three-tier system. While 150 grants eligibility for courses in Agriculture and Biological Sciences, programs in Computing (SICT), Electrical Systems (SESET), and Architecture require a minimum of 170. Medicine and Surgery requires 200.
Does FUTO offer Medicine and Surgery?
Yes. FUTO has a fully approved College of Medicine offering the MBBS degree program. Note that applicants must score a minimum of 200 in JAMB and obtain their 5 core O'Level credits in a single sitting.
Does FUTO accept second choice candidates?
FUTO technically requires candidates to make the institution their First Choice to be screened. However, if you originally chose another university, you can still apply provided you first process a 'Change of Institution' to FUTO on the JAMB portal.
How do Direct Entry candidates apply to FUTO?
Direct Entry candidates must apply through the FUTO portal and are strictly mandated to forward their physical academic transcripts directly to the FUTO Registrar before the end of the screening window.
