JAMB Cut-Off
200+
UNIBEN strictly enforces a high baseline cut-off mark. A minimum UTME score of 200 is generally required to participate in the Post-UTME screening. However, highly competitive programs like Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Law, Pharmacy, and Computer Science demand aggregate scores significantly higher than the baseline.

Est. Tuition
₦57k - ₦180k
As a Federal University, pure tuition is theoretically free for undergraduate Nigerian students. However, students pay consolidated school charges covering library, laboratory, ICT, medical, sanitation, and municipal fees. Returning student fees sit at a standard baseline (₦56,500 - ₦60,500), while freshmen pay significantly higher consolidated fees due to mandatory onboarding levies. These fees are tiered, with Science and Medical programs commanding higher rates than Non-Science programs.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is one of Nigeria's highly prestigious, first-generation federal universities. Established in 1970, it has grown into a massive academic powerhouse renowned for its rigorous academic standards and prolific research outputs. Over the years, UNIBEN has unbundled its core disciplines into 15 highly specialized faculties and schools, proudly hosting distinct faculties for Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and an expansive College of Medical Sciences.
UNIBEN operates primarily out of its sprawling Ugbowo Main Campus in Benin City, with an annex at the Ekehuan Campus (home to Fine Arts and Theatre Arts). The university offers an incredibly vibrant, culturally rich, and highly competitive student life. Known universally as 'Great UNIBEN', the institution fosters strong student unionism, active social clubs, and high-level sports. The university manages student lifecycles through its highly integrated digital infrastructure, the Waeup Kofa Portal, handling everything from course registrations to 100% online clearance for incoming freshmen.
💡 Pro Tip: Securing admission into UNIBEN is strictly merit-based and highly competitive. You must make UNIBEN your First Choice institution. A minimum JAMB score of 200 is strictly enforced just to be eligible for the physical Post-UTME CBT screening. To secure admission into high-demand programs like MBBS, Nursing, or Computer Science, candidates must aim well above 240 in JAMB and perform excellently in the CBT, as the final admission uses an aggregate formula. Remember that Medicine requires a single-sitting O'Level result. Once admitted, ensure you have a Red Background Passport photograph, valid result scratch cards, and sworn affidavits ready for the strictly online clearance process.

UNIBEN's 'Waeup Kofa' portal is an unforgiving, fully automated clearance system. Unlike other universities where you can plead with a physical clearance officer, UNIBEN's clearance is 100% online. If you upload a blue or white background passport instead of the strictly mandated RED background, or if you provide an invalid/used O'Level scratch card, your clearance will hang indefinitely and you will not be matriculated. Do not let the 200 general cut-off mark deceive you; for flagship courses like Medicine, Nursing, Law, and Computer Science, anything below 240 is extremely risky. Furthermore, UNIBEN's Post-UTME is a highly competitive, physical CBT. You cannot 'wing' this exam; it is notorious for its speed, tight supervision, and complex logical reasoning questions.
You cannot survive UNIBEN without understanding its geography. The university is split between the massive 'Ugbowo' Main Campus and the smaller 'Ekehuan' Campus (which houses creative courses like Theatre Arts and Fine Arts). Do not rent a lodge until you confirm your campus! If you are at Ugbowo and miss out on the highly competitive on-campus hostels, the undisputed off-campus student epicenters are 'BDPA', 'Ekosodin', and 'Osasogie'. BDPA is premium, relatively serene, and directly opposite the main gate. Ekosodin is a massive residential town bordering the back of the campus; it has a rugged historical reputation but is the most vibrant student hub. A vital survival tip for Benin City: the city's distinct red soil will absolutely ruin your white sneakers during the rainy season, and the notorious traffic along the Ugbowo-Lagos road requires you to leave your off-campus lodge very early to catch an 8:00 AM lecture.
UNIBEN is historically one of the most subscribed universities in Nigeria. Admissions are highly cut-throat, particularly for the College of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Engineering. Less competitive programs usually fall within the Faculty of Education and certain disciplines in the Faculty of Arts.
