Applicants with SSCE O-level result are eligible when they have: a) minimum of FIVE O-level credits in relevant science subjects including English and Mathematics in not more than two sittings, OR b) minimum of THREE O-level credits but must remedy the deficient credits before absorption into a degree program.
Candidates must have sat for UTME, applied to BUK as first choice, and scored the required aggregate. Must obtain a minimum of Five (5) passes at Credit level in SSCE (WAEC/NECO) in not more than two (2) sittings, including English and Mathematics. Must also register and write the Post-UTME test.
Requirements are OND (with merit), NCE, IJMB (with a minimum of 8 points), GCE ‘A’ Level (3 credits) and HND (Pass). Applicants must also possess all necessary ‘O’ Level requirements (English is compulsory for all; Mathematics for science/social sciences).
Requirements are OND (with merit), NCE, IJMB (min 8 points), GCE ‘A’ Level (3 credits) and HND (Pass) plus standard 'O' Level requirements. Only candidates of twenty five (25) years of age and above will be admitted. 'O' level results only are not accepted.
All candidates must provide Academic Transcripts. Ph.D/M.Phil requires relevant Masters with CGPA of at least 3.50/5.00. Masters programmes require a minimum of a Good Second Class Lower Degree or a Degree plus PGD at Credit level. Engineering requires O'Level Credit in English, Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
BUK admission competitiveness varies significantly by programme. Meeting the general UTME eligibility score only qualifies a candidate for the admission process and does not guarantee admission. Professional and high-demand programmes such as Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing Science and Law generally require much stronger performance than many programmes in the Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences. BUK also requires candidates to satisfy the correct O'Level and UTME subject combinations for their chosen course, and admission decisions depend on the university's screening and programme-specific requirements. Candidates should therefore treat the general cut-off as an eligibility threshold rather than a guaranteed admission score.
ℹ️ Admission timelines and competitiveness information are based on historical patterns and verified institutional requirements. Exact dates, programme availability, and admission conditions may change by academic session.

Active Weights: 50:50 ratio
(JAMB ÷ 8) + (Post-UTME ÷ 2)BUK combines JAMB (divided by 8) and the BUK Aptitude Test BUKAT (divided by 2) in equal 50:50 weighting for a combined aggregate out of 100. This formula is independently confirmed across multiple sources spanning several years, suggesting it's a stable, long-standing policy rather than one that changes yearly. O'Level results are not scored in the aggregate they only gate eligibility (5 credits including English and Mathematics, in not more than 2 sittings).

Bayero University Kano (BUK) is a prestigious federal university situated in Kano State, Northern Nigeria. Established in 1962, it has grown into a massive academic hub renowned for its robust faculties ranging from Agriculture and Medicine to Earth and Environmental Sciences.
BUK operates across multiple campuses, including the expansive New Campus along Gwarzo Road and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Students enjoy a culturally rich, highly disciplined, and vibrant academic environment with extensive library and hostel facilities.
💡 Pro Tip: To secure admission into BUK, note that the general baseline was recently lowered to 160 but this alone is far from enough for competitive programmes. The university strictly prioritizes first-choice candidates and conducts a mandatory Post-UTME screening exercise (BUKAT). Your final aggregate combines your JAMB score and BUKAT score equally (50:50), so a strong screening performance matters just as much as your UTME result.
Verified by AdmitNode Experts
BUK strictly enforces the Federal Government's Catchment Area policy (heavily favoring states like Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto). If you are applying from outside the North-West, you must aim significantly higher than the 180 baseline to make the highly competitive National Merit list. However, unlike some premier federal universities, BUK officially accepts combined O'Level results (two sittings), which is a massive lifeline for applicants.
You must check where your faculty is located before paying for accommodation. BUK is split between the 'New Campus' (Gwarzo Road) and the 'Old Campus' (Kabuga). If your hostel is at the Old Campus but your lectures are at the New, you will spend a lot of time and money on daily tricycle (Keke) shuttles. Additionally, BUK strictly enforces a culturally modest dress code; campus security will turn you back at the gates if your attire violates these regulations.
