Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a premier federal university of technology located in Bauchi, North-East Nigeria. Named after the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, the institution was established in 1980 to drive technological and scientific advancement in the country. Over the years, ATBU has expanded significantly from its core engineering and environmental technology roots, successfully establishing a highly sought-after Medical program (unbundled into Clinical, Basic Clinical, Basic Medical, and Allied Health Sciences), a robust Faculty of Computing, and a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
ATBU operates a dynamic dual-campus system. The historic Yelwa Campus and the expansive Gubi Main Campus are connected by dedicated university shuttles. The institution is heavily ICT-driven, requiring students to handle all course registrations, fee payments, and hostel balloting via the robust ATBU student portal. Students (proudly called 'Balewaites') enjoy a rigorous academic environment backed by active technical workshops, alongside robust ancillary pathways like IJMB, Remedial, and Sandwich programs.
💡 Pro Tip: Admission into ATBU is highly competitive, particularly for Engineering, Medical, and Veterinary programs. You must make ATBU your absolute first choice in JAMB. While a score of 160 makes you eligible for the online screening, candidates applying for Medicine, Nursing, or Computer & Communication Engineering should aim well above 200. Ensure your O'Level subjects strictly align with ATBU's specific requirements for your course, and remember that uploading your results to the JAMB CAPS portal is a mandatory prerequisite for clearance.
Direct Entry candidates must apply through JAMB and possess a minimum of Lower Credit in ND/HND, Merit in NCE, or an acceptable grade in IJMB/A'Level qualifications in relevant fields. They must also participate in the ATBU online screening.
For Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), candidates need a First Degree or an HND with a Credit pass. For Master's degrees, candidates require a minimum of Second Class Honours with a CGPA of 3.00. For Ph.D. programs, candidates must possess a Master's degree in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.50. Some candidates may be subjected to qualifying exams.
ATBU conducts a strictly online document-based Post-UTME screening. Candidates must register on portal.atbu.edu.ng, pay the ₦2,000 processing fee via Remita, and upload their O'Level results. No physical CBT exam is written. Admission aggregate is calculated based on JAMB scores and O'Level grades, which must be concurrently uploaded to the JAMB CAPS portal.
