Main Campus
Nekede, Owerri West
Federal Polytechnic, Nekede (FPNO) is a highly sought-after federal government-owned tertiary institution located in Nekede, Owerri West, Imo State. Established originally in 1978 by the Imo State government as the College of Technology, Owerri, it was taken over by the federal government in 1993. FPNO is renowned for bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical skills, driving technical innovation across South-Eastern Nigeria.
The campus offers a bustling, fast-paced academic environment typical of premier Nigerian polytechnics. With an expansive offering that spans eight specialized schools—including highly structured faculties for Engineering, Health Technologies, and Information/Communication Technology—students are equipped with both the entrepreneurial drive and practical proficiency required in the modern workforce.
💡 Pro Tip: Gaining admission into the Regular (Morning) programme at Federal Polytechnic Nekede is highly competitive. You must score at least 140 in JAMB and cannot use awaiting results. Ensure your O'Level combinations are valid (do not mix NABTEB with WAEC/NECO). If applying for HND, note the strict Lower Credit requirement, unless you are an alumnus of the polytechnic with exactly a Pass and 2 years of work experience.

Federal Polytechnic Nekede operates some of the strictest administrative screening rules in the country. Two massive traps disqualify thousands yearly: first, you absolutely cannot combine a NABTEB result with WAEC or NECO (it will lead to instant disqualification). Second, 'Awaiting Results' are strictly forbidden. If your JAMB score hovers around the 140-150 mark and you want a competitive course like Computer Science or Mass Communication, the Regular (Morning) merit list will likely bounce you. The ultimate backdoor is to apply for the Evening or Weekend programs; the cut-offs are significantly lower, though you must be prepared for higher tuition fees. For HND applicants, beware of the brutal 'alumni privilege' trap: if you graduated with a 'Pass' from another polytechnic, do not bother applying. Nekede ONLY accepts Pass-level HND applicants if they did their ND at Nekede and have two years of post-ND work experience.
Nekede is one of the most vibrant and densely populated student environments in South-East Nigeria, located just outside the Owerri metropolis. Because on-campus hostels are highly subsidized but severely limited, the vast majority of 'Nekedites' live in surrounding off-campus hubs. You must familiarize yourself with areas like 'Backgate', 'Umuerim', 'Umuokoto', and 'Umualum'. Rent in these areas can be surprisingly pricey due to the massive student demand. Furthermore, if you are admitted into the Evening Programme, your accommodation location is a matter of safety and logistics. Evening classes can run late into the night, so renting a lodge very close to the Backgate or Umuerim will save you from the stress and risk of hunting for 'Keke' (tricycles) in the dark.

For Higher National Diploma (HND) admissions, candidates must possess an ND from a recognized institution with a minimum of Lower Credit (CGPA 2.50). Candidates with a Pass level (CGPA not below 2.00) require a minimum of two (2) years post-ND cognate working experience; however, this concession is strictly applicable to Federal Polytechnic Nekede graduates ONLY. Pass-level candidates from other institutions will not be admitted.
Federal Polytechnic Nekede conducts an online Post-UTME screening exercise. Candidates generate an invoice from the school portal and pay the ₦2,000 fee. Candidates must ensure their O'Level results are uploaded to JAMB CAPS at accredited centers.
